On my drive to the office on Highway 65 and the James River Expressway every morning I am amazed at what I see. People merging onto multiple lanes of traffic when looking at their phones and have no idea what is going on around them. Far too many people are texting and driving today. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) just released a study that based upon 2011 numbers over 660,000 are on the road texting at any giving moment. That works out to roughly 5% on all drivers on the road during daylight hours during any given moment. Almost 9% were using some sort of device, even if hands free at any given moment. Most drivers know that texting while driving is a dangerous. Many still use their cell phones and other mobile devices when they are behind the wheel. Most drivers see texting while driving as dangerous when other drivers do it, but do not see how their own driving gets worse. Given the report is based on 2011 numbers I wouldn’t be surprised that the number is even higher now.
