Where are the most car accidents in Springfield Missouri?
From the News-Leader
The Top 10, most crashes to least
1. Kansas Expressway and Grand Street
In 2013, the most recent year with crash totals recorded, the city counted 54 crashes at this intersection. Like eight of the 10 intersections on the list, this one is maintained by MoDOT.
Over a five-year period, 62 percent of the crashes were rear-ends. That’s not surprising to anyone who regularly turns north or south onto to the fast, busy Kansas Expressway from Grand Street.
“That’s pretty typical at a signal,” Rickman said. “(Signals) get traffic through pretty quickly, but you’re going to get some rear-ends. Luckily it’s not a lot of serious crashes.”
2. Battlefield Road and Campbell Avenue
In 2013 there were 53 crashes reported at this intersection. It’s one of two city-maintained intersections on the list.
3. Glenstone Avenue and Primrose Street
This might be a surprise to some, at No. 3, as Primrose Street isn’t one of the major roads through town, but consider the high volume of businesses in that area — Target, Lowes, Best Buy and restaurants — and it makes some sense why it had 52 crashes in 2013.
Rickman said that intersection also has mostly rear-end crashes, more than 80 percent in the last five years.
4. Battlefield Road and Glenstone Avenue
Not too far north on Glenstone Avenue comes another major intersection in a heavy retail district — right at the corner of Battlefield Mall. It had 47 crashes in 2013.
Again, this includes mostly rear-end crashes — about 75 percent over the past five years.
5. Kansas Expressway and Sunshine Street
Technically tied for No. 4 with 47 crashes in 2013, it follows the same pattern as most of the other intersections, mostly rear-end crashes and about 75 percent included no injuries.
It’s also the second intersection that includes the higher-speed Kansas Expressway. Rickman said that’s a factor in an intersection having a higher number of crashes.
6. Battlefield Road and National Avenue
It had 45 crashes in 2013, and is the second city-maintained intersection on the list. Engineers say this intersection has seen the number of crashes slightly increasing.
7. Glenstone Avenue and Sunshine Street
Recorded 42 crashes in 2013.
8. Kansas Expressway and Walnut Lawn Street
Not as busy as some intersections, but has some similarities with the top spot on this list at Kansas Expressway and Grand Street. The Walnut Lawn intersection had 40 crashes in 2013, and has seen a significant increase in recent years, according to the city.
9. Battlefield Road and Kansas Expressway
This intersection had 35 crashes in 2013, not a shock considering it’s one of the city’s 10 busiest intersections.
10. Kansas Expressway and Norton Road
There were 35 crashes at this intersection in 2013. Norton Road isn’t a major arterial in Springfield, but it’s very close to the Interstate 44 diverging diamond and a large retail district.
